On August 21, 1914, Private John Parr was the first British soldier to die in action during the First World War.

Almost a million more Brits would die during the conflict, the last being Private George Edwin Ellison, just 90 minutes before the Armistice in November 11, 1918.

In an unplanned coincidence their graves face each other just 15ft apart at the St Symphorien cemetery near Mons.
